Read
In Quarantined With a Newborn, Alone, Tanzina Vega is openly vulnerable about how the pandemic has exposed the fragility of her social network. Vega is a popular radio host of The Takeout on New York Public Radio and did not expect to be the last one among her reliants standing when the music stopped during social isolation musical chairs. Her raw, honest account is worth the read.
“But the pandemic has highlighted just how fragile my social networks really are, which, as a public figure and radio host who’s had her name and face splashed across billboards and tote bags, is something that’s hard to admit.”
Reflect
Who do you count among your reliants? Write down who you seek advice and/or help from in your life right now. Consider how that has or hasn’t changed since the beginning of the year. Look back even further and think about how that list of people has changed over your adult life. Have the names on the list changed? Has the number of people on the list changed? What do you think influenced those changes? Last time I reflected on this, I noticed that:
“my personal network had more than 75% turnover every 7 years, during which I relocated twice, got married and divorced.”
Realize
“Remember, social distancing means physical distance—not social isolation.” Reach out to one person this week and try a new virtual experience: share a virtual meal, meditate together, or even read someone a bedtime story from afar. Even if you don’t need it, someone else might.
