The Reliants Project #30

How networks shape our lives

Thanks for signing up to all the new readers! Here are some nuggets about how networks shape your wellbeing, relationships and community to help you actively cultivate yours.

Wellbeing

It’s interesting to see the way some organisations are leveraging hyper-local networks to boost vaccination rates. Social media app Nextdoor teams with Moderna, Albertsons to boost vaccination rates in communities.

“It’s actually the people near and dear that are in local proximity to you, the people you trust, the people you talk to every day, and it’s often not about them telling you the ‘why’ to do it,” said Friar, who departed Square to join Nextdoor at the end of 2018. “It’s telling you that they have done it, and that’s what gives people confidence.”

Relationships

How to prepare your network for life after the pandemic shares valuable advice about how to rebuild your network as the world starts opening up. Here are their 3 key pieces of advice, and I couldn’t agree more!

  1. Seek spontaneous interactions

  2. Build diversity

  3. Be individual

Michelle Rogan was also on my podcast last year. You can listen to her interview here.

Community

I tend not to include any venture investment articles in this newsletter, but I thought Community-Driven Companies: What They Are and Why We’re Investing in Them was such a clear, concise take on the subject. They believe you can identify community-driven companies when:

  1. customers identify as members

  2. members are able to create value for other members

  3. members start the marketing and sales flywheel

So simple, but so many organisations focus on creating value for their members rather than letting other members contribute to that value creation. They’ve even created a metric to measure community return on investment (CROI).

(VALUE GAINED — COST) / COST = CROI
